Karen Marie Garrett is a top-drawer pianist headed for bigger things. Allure of Sanctuary is the Olympia artist’s third release, following a straight classical disc and another in this New Age vein. Story studied classical piano while growing up in Southern California and even thought about becoming a music librarian or theorist for a while. Then she heard jazz pianist Bill Evans at a New York club, and the experience changed her perspective on music overnight. Story, who had studied at Juilliard and was enrolled at Hunter College at the time, abandoned her academic program in favor of jazz lessons with Sanford Gold, a teacher Evans had recommended. Back in Los Angeles, she continued her musical education at UCLA and the Dick Grove Music Workshops, but it was a job playing piano at a French restaurant that sparked her major breakthrough as a composer. Since the front casing of the piano was missing, Story had no place to put her sheet music and was forced to improvise freely. Eventually, she put some of her spontaneous compositions on tape and sent them to Windham Hill. Within four days, Will Ackerman had called her back and the contract was signed for her first release, Solid Colors, an album of impressionistic piano miniatures. Over the course of five recordings, including a two-album stint with RCA Novus, Story's style has expanded to include electronic duets with Mark Isham and works for various types of ensembles, yet the piano remains the prominent voice in her finely crafted compositions.

“Songs of the Water Rose” is Greg Maroney’s first album, and was composed and recorded when he lived in California. It is interesting to go through a composer’s work in reverse order as I have done with Maroney’s, as often there is a very big change in styles as the artist grows and matures.

“The Sentinel”, Maroney’s most recent album, is a favorite, but his debut is also quite good. As with his other releases, there is a combination of quiet pieces and some that are bigger and more turbulent. Of the quieter pieces, I really like “Simple Pleasures” with its warm sense of contentment and gentle flow. “Alexander’s Calling” is also very beautiful in a joyful, peaceful kind of way. My favorite piece, though, is the bigger and more powerful “Midnight Awakenings.” It feels very much like those times when you awaken during the night and your brain just will not shut down and let you go back to sleep. Several moods and trains of thought run through the piece from musings to worries and turmoil. Maroney lets the themes build and then trail off quietly, and then they start in again - much as those thought processes do during a restless night. This is a really effective piece! Greg Maroney is certainly among the best of our contemporary pianist/composers, and I hope he’ll get the exposure he needs to become more widely known.

Part of a “George Skaroulis Spa Collection,” the seventeen tracks are made up of six new compositions, a shimmering arrangement of Sting’s “Fragile,” newly recorded versions of several of George’s most popular songs, and a few old favorites. Few artists succeed in saying so much with so few notes, and Skaroulis’ graceful melodies and floating ambient poetry are pure musical magic. Clocking in at just over an hour, “Reunion” is the perfect length for a massage session, a lazy soak in your backyard spa (or bathtub!), a prelude to sleep, calming commuting nerves, or just some quiet time in your office chair! Use your imagination, but give yourself time to savor and be soothed by the gorgeous music on “Reunion.”

Sting’s “Fragile” begins the CD, and Skaroulis has really made this song his own. Accompanied on Flamenco guitar by Jean Pierre, the gentle rhythms and repartee between the piano and guitar set a lovely mood for the album as a whole. “Evangelia” first appeared on “Return to Homeland” (2001) and has always been one of my favorites. Hauntingly beautiful in its simplicity, the piece is both elegant and emotionally compelling. The title track is one of the new pieces and has a sweet, wistful melody. “Numinous” was the title track for a 1998 release and is truly a Skaroulis classic, appearing here in its original form - some things need no improvement! “Hopes and Dreams” is another older favorite, newly recorded. “Into the Light” is much more ambient and atmospheric - an interlude of sorts. “Tree of Life” is another new piece, and is quietly enchanting. “Miles Away” conveys both nostalgia and longing. “Forgotten Song” is especially reflective of Skaroulis’ Greek heritage. “New Day” is full of optimism and promise. “Athena” is one of Skaroulis’ signature pieces and appears this time a piano solo - love it! “Awakening” was first released on “Second Nature” (2003), and closes the CD with something of a prayer.

I have been a big fan of George Skaroulis and his music for several years now and have loved all of his thirteen previous releases, but I think this is his best CD yet. It is available from www.evzonemusic.com and cdbaby.com. I give “Reunion” my highest recommendation!

Warmly inviting, and always accessible, it is the kind of album that I dearly love - one where the music is complex enough that one can hear something new each time, and where the familiar strains grow closer to the heart with each listen.

Trained in classical and jazz piano since the age of five, it sounds to me like Maroney is probably most “at home” sitting at the piano and letting musical magic happen. There are jazz elements in Maroney’s music, but I would say that the influences on this CD are of a more classical nature with some of the freedom found in jazz. All of the tracks on this CD are really good, but I have a few favorites. I love “Castle of Wonders” with its swirling, mysterious opening bars, and then dancing rhythms and melody - there is always a sense of mystery, but also of joyful discovery. “Fire Drake” is another upbeat piece full of a dancing sense of elation and wonderful pianistics. Both of these pieces sound like great fun to play as well as to listen to! Most of the rest of the thirteen pieces are a bit slower and more subdued, describing a wide range of emotions and subjects. “Avalon” is a darkly gorgeous piece with lots of deep bass chords and mysterious drama. “Always” is more of a tender love song full of passion as well as gentleness. “Sentinel” is a really great album, and I highly recommend it.

The computer allows me to fully orchestrate my pieces and really fine tune them," said David. David's music has recently been described as Cinematic new age rock. "It is sometimes difficult to categorize my music and this is a term I can live with," David responded. "I enjoy bringing many different influences together in my music," he continues. World music, classical rock, and new age are some of the styles I draw from and enjoy weaving into an entertaining and adventurous whole. "I have always loved the sound of the orchestra. Now I believe I have refined a wonderful blend combining the best elements of the acoustic world, with the electronic world." When not chained to his Apple Macintosh composing, David likes to play baseball, create 3-D art projects, and write screenplays.

Ernesto Cortazar was a Mexican Pianist and composer. He was born in 1940. He started his music career in Mexico at the age of 18 composing the background music for the motion picture “La Risa de la Ciudad”. Since then, he has created the background music for more than 500 motion pictures. He has traveled to more than 25 countries to perform as he only knows. He gave concerts at very important places as The Kremlin (USSR), The Mexican Presidential House and others. Orphaned at the age of 13 years, Ernesto Cortazar the 2nd determined to uphold the legacy left behind by his father, Ernesto Cortazar the 1st. By the time Ernesto was 19 his music was recognised with an award for the score of the movie "Laughter of the City". After this first achievement in the film industry, Ernesto went on to compose music for over 500 films in his career. He has collaborated with legendary director Marshall Mason; Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Lanford Wilson; and actors including John Malkovich, Jon Voight, Ethan Hawke, Tyne Daly, Tony Randall, Joan Allen, Christopher Reeve, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, Judd Hirsch, Laura Linney and Christine Lahti to name a few. Also, through repeated invitations to perform at various exclusive events at Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute and John Denver’s Choices for the Future and countless environmental and humanitarian symposiums around the world, Kater has had the honor of performing for celebrities and dignitaries such as Mikhail Gorbachev, George Bush, Thich Nhat Hanh, Gerald Ford, Ted Turner, Shirley Maclaine, Dustin Hoffman, Sean Connery, Sidney Pollack, Alan Alda, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Dennis Weaver, Griffin Dunne, Raul Julia, Karl Malden, Laura Dern, James L. Brooks and many others.

Of German birth and descent, Peter moved to New Jersey from Munich, Germany at the age of four and began studying the piano, at his mother’s demand, when he was seven. Even at this young age Peter was compelled to play the classical music he was learning "his way". And this was seen as a serious problem by his first 3 teachers in the first year of his training. He wasn't applauded for his own sense of melody, time and structure, but rather discouraged from being unique and improvising around well-known classical themes. After seven years of classical training Peter was encouraged to find his own voice in playing Rock & Roll and Top 40 bands around New Jersey and New York while studying contemporary improvisation. Moving to Boulder, Colorado at the age of eighteen, he began a six-year period of playing only improvisationally in clubs throughout the Rocky Mountain region. "I didn’t want to play anything the same way twice, being in the moment and spontaneous was and still is very important to me, both musically and personally," said Kater. When he was twenty years old he accepted a scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles but quit after two months, preferring his life as a professional musician.

When Kater realized that his next step was composing and recording his music, he moved back to Colorado "to a less external, more inspiring natural environment" and released his first album of piano solos, SPIRIT, in 1983. To his surprise his albums started receiving national attention and charting in the Top 10 of National Airplay charts. Other opportunities started coming his way in the form of phone calls from various television and theatre directors and producers and Kater started to branch out and explore many avenues of creative expression and composition. Since then he's recorded and performed nationally and internationally with some of the worlds most talented and accomplished musicians, actors, directors and authors.

In the late 1980s, the "beautiful music" radio format came to an end when Philadelphia's Easy 101, WEAZ-FM, switched formats and call letters. It's a shame, because Suzanne Ciani's music would have been perfect there. She's a veteran keyboardist who started out composing avant-garde works on a keyboardless Buchla synthesizer. She went on to fortune as a commercial jingle writer and fame as an early New Age star. But over the years, Ciani has been plying a treacle-laced brand of instrumental music in which she wears her heart on a keyboard adorned with Hallmark valentine homilies.

Though marketed as New Age, her faux-orchestral music shares more of a lineage with 101 Strings, with compositions full of orchestral sweep and gentle melodies that attain the sentimental but never the serene or the sublime. "Sargasso Sea," a duet with cellist Joe Hébert, suggests that Ciani can go a little deeper, and oboist Paul McCandless of Oregon almost pulls out "Wine Dark Sea." His beautiful multitracked oboe and English horn lines echo and intertwine with each other before he breaks out into solos. But tracks like "Dentecane" are swept overboard by Ciani's overwrought melodies and strings. If your idea of romance is candlelit dinners, moonlit walks, and a Mantovani soundtrack, take a trip on her Silver Ship.

“Seven Valleys” is Greg Maroney’s sixth album of original piano solos, and to my ears, his best work to date. This is no small praise, as all of Maroney’s CDs have been great and several of his previous releases were on my Top 10 lists for the years they were released. “Seven Valleys” is so good that I recommended that Maroney submit it for consideration for a Grammy Award. With all of the CDs I listen to in the course of a year, that should give you an idea of just how good this CD is. As with his previous albums, Maroney’s music was inspired by his rural surroundings in south central Pennsylvania, his closeness to the earth and nature, his pets, life’s amazing moments (good, bad, dark, happy), and the people who inhabit his world. Intensely personal

yet universally understandable, Maroney paints a vivid portrait of his life, revealing a deeply spiritual yet very human soul. Few artists have the technique AND the heart to create such colorful and richly emotional music. If you are not yet familiar with Greg Maroney’s music, this CD is a must. Fans of any of his previous releases will love this one, too. A more natural touch or sincere musical message you are not likely to find anytime soon.

“Seven Valleys” begins with the elegantly flowing “Becoming One.” Full of passion and grace, the piece sets the stage beautifully. Some of my favorites of Maroney’s pieces have to do with “big” weather events, and “Cloudburst” fits that category (both categories, actually - big weather and favorites!). The first couple of minutes of the piece suggest the building momentum of a coming storm - a calm but edgy beginning with electricity in the air; intensity builds gradually as winds start to swirl and dance; then the sky opens, releasing a downpour that is both energetic and refreshing - I can’t wait for Greg to do the sheet music for this one! The title track is much more contented and sunny, but has an infectious energy - this is a happy place! “Haiku” conveys a sense of gentle simplicity and peacefulness. “Addie” is about one of Maroney’s rescue dogs who smiles, and the piece exudes feelings of trust and joy in the small but significant things in life. “Dark” was composed during a period when Maroney was losing his sight in one eye. For a musician, this sort of thing would be extremely difficult, but for a trauma nurse (Maroney’s “day” job), it is absolutely devastating. Fortunately, the condition was diagnosed and treated, restoring Maroney’s sight. This piece is wrenching in its deep, tumultuous emotion - an incredible piece. “Evening Song” immediately brings us back to beauty and calm. “Before You” is a graceful and passionate love song that speaks volumes without uttering a word. “Daybreak” effectively captures the spirit and promise of a new day. “Rose” is another breathtaking beauty, emotionally rich and elegant.

“Seven Valleys” is an amazing CD that will draw you in from the first notes and hold you there until the final chords. Don’t just put this one in the background - savor the many moods and emotions that Greg Maroney has so effectively captured and conveyed in his music. "Wind Chimes" is Greg Maroney's fifth solo piano album to date, and he is an artist who gets better with each new release despite the fact that all his previous releases were great! His easy grace at the piano comes from a lifelong relationship with the instrument that allows him to communicate whatever emotion or event he chooses in a way that seems as natural as talking. Maroney draws the inspiration for his music from his natural surroundings, life experiences, and the people in his life. On this album, he refers to the many sets for wind chimes that hang at his farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania - how they are always in the same places, but how the sounds change from day to day depending on the wind, the thickness of the air, and his own moods. Music (and all forms of creativity and artistry) is much the same. On one day, a set of chords will go in a lighthearted direction, but the next day they could become very dark and moody. Maroney expresses many moods and emotions on "Wind Chimes," but overall, this music is upbeat, contented, and very beautiful.

The CD opens with "Dance of the Imagination," a gracefully swirling piece that has a lovely rubato flow that feels much like a daydream. I love "Breathe," a slightly more abstract, ambient piece that also swirls and dances, but is a little darker and much more passionate - just gorgeous! "Dancing Dogs" has a Baroque style and a theme and variations form. The main theme is played straight; the first variation is a little livelier and more embellished as it picks up the pace. As the piece evolves, it gets faster and more and more fun - these are some happy dogs! "Sanctuary Medley" is a bit more stately and classical. the first movement is hymn-like in its formality, but the second has a beautifully free flowing quality, perhaps suggesting two different types of sanctuary. "Spring Breeze" is another standout with its peaceful, gentle warmth - refreshing! "Haunting Beauty" reminds me a bit of "The Reluctant Ballerina," one of my favorite tracks from Maroney's "Harmony Grove" album - very elegant and graceful. I also especially like "Sailing to Atlantis," which is more mysterious and dramatic. As the title implies, one senses adventure and moving forward into the unknown. "Taking Wing" sings of freedom and joyous exhilaration.

Greg Maroney has outdone himself once again. One of my favorite pianist/composers, his music is always a delight to listen to and absorb. I'm sure this album would be fine as background music, but give yourself a treat and crank up the volume and listen to a pianist who really knows what he's doing! Recommended!

Greg Maroney is a very gifted pianist. The innovative New Age/Neo Classical piano music found in his 5 CDs is superbly written and comes from the heart. All the songs have a warmth and yearning that speaks to the listener, bringing them nearer to their own spirit. His life and setting, in concert with his past and present, all add to the stories that are behind his elegant music.

Greg Maroney has studied piano since the age of five. He has also studied music from other cultures, especially Middle Eastern music and the music of India. Bringing these influences into his own Neo Classical/New Age compositions has led him to record and produce 4 different CDs of solo piano.

"The Copper Hat" was recorded February of 2001 after a move to rural Pennsylvania. Many of the songs have stories behind their composition. During a visit to his mother, who at the time was in the midst of Alzheimer's disease, he found that someone had made her a copper wire hat in the shape of a pyramid to help improve her failing mind. She wore the copper hat, tied with ribbons under her chin, around the house. The song "The Copper Hat" was composed when his mother spontaneously started dancing with complete innocence to his music with this hat on her head.

A mention should also be made of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. Without a particularly memorable day spent there, there would be no Esmeralda & the 17 Goats.

The album is dedicated to his mother, the woman in the Copper Hat, who gave him the gift of piano.

"The Reluctant Ballerina" is one of my favorites. It tells about a timid ballerina who comes into her own as the music sets her free. The beautiful melody becomes more flowing as the dancer lets herself go, and it's easy to picture the shy dancer becoming one with the music and movement as she gets swept away, forgetting her inhibitions. "Elementals" was composed during the time of Maroney's mother's illness to her passing. Much darker in mood, I can imagine Maroney sitting at the piano late into the night, working through the tangle of emotions that fill a person at such a time. This is a passionate and very personal piece, and the emotions are clear. The next piece, "Rising," describes the relief and peace of his mother's transition. It is also somewhat darker than the other pieces, but there is a strong feeling of hope and celebration. "Long Walk Home" is a gorgeous piece. A bit melancholy and introspective, it is in no rush to go anywhere, and seems to be drinking in whatever it encounters along the way. "Beneath the Sycamore" is full of grace and longing, and could easily be a lovely movie theme. "Nature's Fury" is a powerful depiction of an approaching thunder storm. From watching the ominous black clouds to feeling a swirling wind to seeing the brilliant flash of lightning, this is a great piece! The closing track, "The Chicken Chase," is huge fun. Anyone who has experienced chickens scurrying around the yard looking for food can relate. I could also visualize children running after the chickens, trying to catch one, and laughing all the way. This piece must be exhilarating to play!

Philip Aaberg is an American jazz keyboardist and composer who gained international recognition through a series of successful piano recordings released on Windham Hill Records. Although classically trained, Aaberg incorporates classical, jazz, blues, bluegrass, rock, and new music elements into his compositions and musical structures.Although best known for his solo piano work, he is most at home in the chamber jazz genre. His compositions are noted for their "rigorous keyboard technique, diverse influences, and colorful compositional style."

Aaberg was born in northern Montana in 1949 and raised in Chester, Montana. By the age of 14 he was performing with local bands at dances in Chester. Aaberg studied music at Harvard University on a Leonard Bernstein scholarship. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in music, he moved to San Francisco and played in blues clubs for several years.He also toured and recorded as a member of Elvin Bishop's Group at the time of its greatest popularity, and co-wrote the title song of the band's 1976 "Struttin' My Stuff" release.

In 1985, Aaberg signed a recording contract with Windham Hill Records and released the highly acclaimed solo album High Plains that showcased his eclectic musical background. He followed this up with five solo albums: Cinema (1992), Field Notes (2000), Live from Montana (2000), which received a Grammy nomination, Christmas (2002), and Blue West (2005). Aaberg also appeared regularly on the popular Windham Hill Sampler albums over the past 20 years and has had success in various collaborations and ensemble projects.

Aaberg has performed with the Boston Pops and has appeared at the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival. As a guest artist, he has performed on over 200 albums and on PBS's All-American Jazz program, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination. He has appeared with Peter Gabriel and the Doobie Brothers in concert.

In 2000, Aaberg began his own record label, Sweetgrass Music, through which he has since endeavored to produce music that "connects a global audience to the sweeping landscape of the West." Throughout his career, Aaberg has produced music that consistently translated Montana's farms, ranches, and native cultures into "musical concepts" and has "forged a unique keyboard style that paints an audible portrait of his home state."

Christmas is a time of strong emotions, from joy to sadness and from bubbly effervescence to moody melancholy. Jon Schmidt Christmas captures the feelings of the holiday season in all their richness. Schmidt's piano is sweet and easy on the ear. But his straight ahead simplicity can be deceptive, belying the immense depth of his work. I was impressed with the range of emotions both conveyed and evoked by his work.

I was swept away by the vibrance of I Saw Three Ships. In a kick- up-your-heels irish romp, Schmidt's fingers dance an impromptu Riverdance. Schmidt's own arrangement, Christmas Morning, is an upbeat tune that celebrates all the best of Christmas morning: the anticipation of opening brightly colored packages, waking up early to that first cup of hot coffee, and being caught in the whirlwind called cooking the Christmas dinner. And, finally, his rendering of Silent Night struck just the right chord for me--reverent jubilation. His almost silent introduction builds to a joyful crescendo. Schmidt's love of the Christmas season is evident in his play.

Jon Schmidt (born 1966) is an American pianist located in Salt Lake City. He describes his style as "New Age Classical." He was born to German immigrants who acquainted him with the works of such composers as Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. He began songwriting at age 11. To date, he has released seven albums and seven piano books containing transcriptions of original arrangements.
His work is often described as New Age music with pop elements of hook and melody. The master new age piano pioneer took a cool and rhythmic detour in the early 2000s, working with some top smooth jazz stars to create a spirited, radio - friendly hybrid he playfully referred to as "smooth age." After returning to his roots (and his original label, Narada) with the atmospheric Spirit Romance, his 2005 dual project with flutist Gary Stroutsos, Lanz, on his beautiful and impressionistic Shanachie debut Painting the Sun, comes full - circle back to the elegant and contemplative (but still engagingly melodic) solo piano vibe that launched his career 25 years earlier. His original idea for the album title was "A Time for Peace," but taking a walk around his Seattle area home on a sunny spring day found him looking up and thinking about the artistic spirit of one's soul and energy - which is what has always emerged in his deepest musings throughout his career. Beyond the eloquently stated originals (highlighted by the hypnotic title track, the highly improvisational "Spanish Blue," a thoughtful "Hymn," and the dark toned, moody "Evening Song"), Lanz mines the familiar ground of his musical influences as he covers the Pete Seeger-composed Byrds classic "Turn Turn Turn." This lush reading continues in the whimsical spirit of his 1998 British Invasion tribute Songs from an English Garden. Pianist William Joseph's debut album, Within mixes instrumental pop, classical compositions, and reworked rock tunes into an atmospheric mlange that seems to be aimed at a middle ground between classical and new age. Most likely appealing to fans of lite-classical artists such as Josh Groban and Jim Brickman, Within features Joseph at the piano backed by strings both real and synthesized as well as a shiny layer of orchestral and programmed beats all via the production wizardry of Grammy winner David Foster. Despite hip crossover attempts with Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and the soft rock classic "Dust in the Wind," the album works best as a kind of background music as there isn't much difference between his "pop" tunes and such classical standards as "Ave Maria." A crisp technician, Joseph does display a marked intensity on the title track and that coupled with his darkly handsome, matinee idol looks should garner him more interest than this album might have otherwise.
